PART 1 summary

Bill Gates in his TED talk, on mosquitoes, Malaria, and education, tackles the health challenge of Malaria that poor countries in Asia and Africa face. He also discusses the aspect of education in the world. He begins his talk by saying that he focuses on fixing problems that affect mankind. He states that when more people are involved in solving these problems, then the more effective the movement of tackling human problems will be. His talk highlights the need to pay attention to challenges that occur around the world because this will allow other brilliant people to be part of human progress. Gates use slideshow presentation to present real and graphic pictures to support his ideas. He uses hand motions to place emphasis to his ideas. His first topic is malaria in African nations where it is still a killer disease. Gates explain how malaria is affecting the economy of these nations. People have to sleep under mosquito nets to prevent mosquitoes. The second topic is education. Gates states that the economy needs to accommodate those individuals with less strong education. This calls for the need to have effective teachers.

Gates define Malaria as a killer disease spread by mosquito. On the second topic on education. The author put across a simple question on, “how do you make a teacher great? He first states that the key towards the creation of successful students is by having educated and strong teachers. Gates also shows that the economy of today has only provided opportunities to individuals with strong education. He believes that this has to be changed so as to allow equal opportunities for all. The most attractive quote he gives is that, “A person with low income will have a higher chance of jail time then gaining an opportunity for a four year degree." He also poses the question, “how do we make education better?” His answer is when we have great teachers. He finalizes this point by saying that the downfall of our education system will be because teachers are not given feedback notifying them on how well they are teaching.

Part 3: Evaluate the Video:

This radio program covers two main topics; the education system of the world and the problem of malaria in Africa. The arguments provided by Gates are credible because he uses real life examples. The focus on differences for rich and poor nations offers a deterministic approach for assessment. The speaker concludes his topic by announcing that rich governments, drug companies and mathematicians should pull their resources in bringing about drastic change in Africa.   Malaria is, for example, hindering the economic progress in Africa because people to provide labor die and the most at risks are children for the future generation progress. This claim should have been presented with supporting evidence or explanation.  The speaker states that the lack adequate resources in solving this problem affects the state of malaria. This concept is true due to the fact that many people are unable to afford the net. The only people with opportunities in the economies are those with strong education. The rest are left to struggle leading most of them to face higher chances of prison life than joining higher education systems. In brief, the video offers numerous ideas for the control of the state of malaria for the different individuals.
